Black girls do ballet? Oh yes they do and they do it with much style and grace. I love to watch all women do ballet, but it’s just something about that black girl magic! I was much too shy to do any kind of activity where I had to be in front of a lot of people when I was growing up. The hubs and I are making sure that our girls are confident little ladies at a young age. We are putting them in activities and they are loving it! Hopefully it helps and they never give up in anything that they do. I can’t wait to put my youngest in a dance class. She really loves to sing and dance and I’d love to see my little ballerina glide across the floor.

About I Just Kept Spinning by Destini Berry
Pages: 26
Age Range: 5-8 and up
I Just Kept Spinning tells the story of a 7-year-old named Destini who really wants to become a dancer. She begins ballet class, but is actually banned from her first recital because of her beautiful long locs. Destini’s ballet teacher felt that her natural hair was unruly, but Destini didn’t give up.
First of all natural hair is beautiful! Unfortunately some people don’t feel the same. There are actually some people that feel that the hair that naturally comes out of our scalps is not “neat”. No one should ever feel any type of way about wearing their natural hair. You should never feel embarrassed or scared to be YOU. Being you is beautiful and amazing and it will always be.
Our Thoughts on I Just Kept Spinning
All girls should have this book in their collection. I don’t ever want my girls to feel like their natural hair isn’t beautiful or good enough. This book definitely brought up a good conversation to have with my oldest. We’ve discussed natural hair before, but not to this extent where even a teacher can be out of line. Shocked is the best way to describe how my daughter felt about the “meanie words” from the teacher. She felt bad for the little girl and thought her hair was beautiful. What did her hair have to do with dancing anyway? Absolutely nothing. If anything her natural hair made her unique.
Destini’s mom was right by her side the entire time and handled the situation quite smoothly. Destini was strong and never gave up. We really loved that about her. I Just Kept Spinning is a beautiful book about grace and never giving up that all little girls should learn about.
It’s great to see a little girl with locs in this book. A lot of people look at locs as not being clean and that’s simply not the case. This is a good book to teach others not to say such offensive things about someone’s natural hair. We loved everything about the book! It was a good read and the illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. Just the right book for girls with natural hair and/or aspiring dancers. There are so many lessons in this book from treating others right, standing up for yourself, just being yourself, and not giving up. Love, love, love it!
