Take Your Dog To Work Day is this week! What? Take your dog to work day? People do that? Why yes they do! Wouldn’t you love to show off your pooch at work and show all of your co-workers just why he is your best friend? Hopefully your company is participating and if this is your first time or even your fifth time taking your dog to work, hopefully the tips below will get you all prepared!
What is Take Your Dog to Work Day?
According to TakeYourDog.com, “…Pet Sitters International’s Take Your Dog To Work Day® (TYDTWDay®) was created to celebrate the great companions dogs make and to encourage their adoption from humane societies, animal shelters and breed rescue clubs. This annual event asks pet lovers to celebrate the humane-canine bond and promote pet adoption by encouraging their employers to support TYDTWDay. Employers are encouraged to open their workplace to employees’ four-legged friends on this one special day.”

6 Tips for Taking Your Dog to Work
- Stop, think about it!
Will your dog REALLY enjoy being out of his element and being at your job with you all day or will it be too overwhelming? If you are having second thoughts about taking your dog to work with you, maybe you shouldn’t take him. Otherwise you may have to use your lunch break to take your dog back home! - Make a checklist
Prepare now! Make sure that your work space is dog safe! Remind yourself to put away anything that your dog shouldn’t be near. Also make sure you aren’t going to forget anything that you need to bring along like a leash….Continue Reading HERE. -
Take breaks
When you take a break, don’t you dare leave Fido behind! He needs potty breaks as well or a breath of fresh air. If you don’t normally take advantage of your breaks at least do so that day for your buddy ol’ pal. Besides no one wants to smell dog poo or hear a whining dog begging you to take him on a little 5 minute walk or to take a bathroom break because you totally forgot. -
Keep Your Dog Entertained
Your dog is going to be so upset if you don’t bring anything to keep him occupied. That’s just rude. Remember to bring his favorite toy, but remember it can’t squeak or make any other awesome sound that your dog loves. That will disrupt everyone at work and people will definitely be giving you the side eye. Bring a simple chew toy or one of those toys that if your dog fiddles around with it long enough he’ll find a treat inside of it. I hope you packed plenty of dog treats because I’m sure your dog is the master of finding dog treats hidden in a toy. -
Multitask
Don’t forget that you brought your dog to work! Give him a little attention every now and then. You know, doggie talk to him if it’s not going to bother anyone else and give him a few cuddles and belly rubs when you can. You’ll give him attention? Good! But definitely don’t be the person that thinks they can just clown around at work all day with the dog and show him off. No, no, no. You still have work to do so you better up your multitasking skills or this might just be the last time you bring your dog to work! I know you know better than that though and you will have it totally under control! Go you! -
Respect others
Everyone just doesn’t love dogs. Weird right? It’s the truth though. If someone doesn’t want to be around your dog don’t try to force them to be even if you think your dog is the nicest dog in the world. Make sure wherever you take your dog in the office that you have him on a leash. This will at least make those that don’t really care for dogs feel a little better. Besides no one wants your dog running around everywhere or all in their space no matter how cute your dog is. Hopefully you’ve already taught your dog simple commands like sit and stay and your dog is well behaved so you will have no worries.

I hope the few tips above help you to have a successful TYDTWD! One last tip is to have fun, but not too much of course.
Have you ever taken your dog to work? How was it? Do you plan to take your dog to work this Friday? Please do tell! We’d love to hear from you and even see pictures!

Aw, I used to be able to take my dog to work every day at my old job but can’t anymore since my commute involves a train! Another great tip to take your dog for a lonnnnnng walk in the morning so they are a little tired while you are working. I used to keep Finn in my office with a baby gate too. Hope a lot of people are able to do it this year!

Aw man 🙁 At least you got to experience it some 🙂 Thanks for the tips!
In Europe it is much more common – my sister always went to work in Germany. I tried but was asked to leave after a week or two because I found it boring and created too much office mischief! Now we work at home with mom every day which is perfect!

Aw man! Maybe one day!
there are lots of companies in the USA that allow it now – I think there is even a website set up to specifically tell you which ones they are. Mind you – being pocket size like you are – no one would notice you sitting on the desk 🙂 🙂 🙂
