I was visiting Dakota’s Den today and I had to share this with you guys because a lot of you may not be aware. Did you know that pet stores and pet shops are bad? I didn’t know this until a couple of months ago when my boyfriend told me. He was watching something on TV about dogs and they were talking about how pet stores get dogs from puppy mills which is not a good thing. What is a puppy mill? According to the ASPCA “a puppy mill is a large-scale commercial dog breeding operation that places profit over the well-being of its dogs—who are often severely neglected—and acts without regard to responsible breeding practices.”
Take a look at the video below that gives you an idea of what happens at puppy mills and pet stores.

This was Simba’s reaction after viewing the video!
Isn’t that sad? I feel bad for all of the puppies that have to go through that. I was in the pet store in the mall a couple of months before I got Simba and I had no idea! Wow. I didn’t get Simba from a pet store though, I got him from a good local breeder. I could have easily bought a dog from a pet store and would have had no idea what it went through.
Please go read the post about this at Dakota’s Den for a lot more information and a giveaway! You can also click here to take the pledge by ASPCA that you will not shop at pet stores and share the video if you’d like. Thanks for all of the information Dakota and the ASPCA!

I have known about puppy mills for awhile now. There are also similar practices for all kinds of animals. A general term is “breeder mills”. I’m most familiar with puppy mills though. I never really understood why people would want to pay hundreds of dollars for a mixed breed dog when they could just get one from a shelter. It’s great of you to spread the word!

If Im at the mall and I happen to be in an ornery mood, I have a habit of going into the pet stores and pretending to be in the market for a dog at which point I begin asking the manager or owner questions about the puppy Im looking at which I know they can’t answer…..
What were the parents like?
What traits did they have?
Why was this breeding done, what was the purpose for selecting the breeding pair?
Is it a repeat breeding?
What are the other individuals from the litter like?
When were they weaned?
I usually dont get past the second or third question before they become too flustered to continue.
If somebody you are looking to purchase a puppy for can’t answer ALL of the above questions, then MOVE ON!
Thanks for the great post, more people need to be aware!
