Are your child’s birthday plans canceled? That doesn’t mean you can’t still celebrate! There are so many ways to celebrate your child’s birthday at home. Due to the pandemic, we won’t be able to celebrate my baby girl’s birthday like we originally planned to. We aren’t going to let that stop us though! I figured many other parents are probably in the same boat as I am right now and might be lowkey freaking out on just how to make a child’s birthday special at home without it being boring. As I think of more ideas, I’ll add them to the list!

Birthday Celebration Ideas at Home
Is your child’s birthday coming up and you’re wondering how you’re going to celebrate a birthday at home? Here are some birthday celebration ideas for you!
At Home Birthday Decorations
Let’s start with birthday decorations for kids! This is probably the easiest thing you can do to make a child feel special on their birthday. Since they can’t celebrate their birthday anywhere else, make sure to go all out to celebrate a birthday at home.
Decorate ALL THE THINGS! You can simply get birthday decorations of their favorite character and put them all around the house or get a little more creative. Here are some birthday decoration ideas:
Decorate Your Child’s Door
You can decorate it however you want. Make the door look like a present. Cover the door with balloons. Use post-its in a fun shape like a heart and cover their door with things you love about them. Put streamers on their door so when they open the door, they walk right into them for a fun surprise. Or better yet make a balloon avalanche or balloon drop so when they open the door, balloons fall and greet them!
Decorate the Bathroom Mirror
Use post-it notes for fun birthday messages or use dry erase markers and get creative and draw a birthday message on the bathroom mirror.
Fill a Room With Balloons
Kids love balloons! While your child is sleeping, fill their room up with balloons or fill the living room up with balloons. This is a nice surprise for your child to wake up to!
Make a Birthday Cake
Help your child make a birthday cake, cake pops, cupcakes, or some other fun birthday sweets. Your child will have fun baking with you and it’s a yummy birthday treat! They will be proud of making their very own birthday cake. If you don’t like baking or don’t want to go out to the store, have a birthday cake delivered!
Try a Copycat Recipe
Let’s whip up something in the kitchen! How about cooking your child’s favorite restaurant meal? There are plenty of copycat recipes on Pinterest. Some copycat recipes are actually pretty simple! Your child will definitely be impressed.
Have a Virtual Birthday Party
Use Zoom or Google Hangouts and have a birthday party virtually. You can let family and friends video call together and sing happy birthday, share birthday messages, watch your child blow out the candles, open presents, dance, play games, and more. Make sure you have the settings for your Zoom or Google Hangout set to private.
Have a Family Cookout
If the weather is nice, throw some food on the grill and eat outside. Get some fresh air and enjoy some outside birthday fun. Play some outside games too!
Birthday Party Games and Activities
If you were going to take your child somewhere for their birthday, you may have to figure out how to switch it up so you can now do that birthday activity at home. For example, if you were going to take your child to do laser tag, how about having water or nerf gun fun outside with the family instead?
Balloon Party Games
You can never have enough fun with balloons, right? Think of some fun things to do with balloons. Pop balloons with a blindfold on. Have a balloon relay race where two people have to run to a chair and sit on a balloon to pop it. Play balloon tennis.
Birthday Scavenger Hunt
Make getting gifts even more fun with a birthday scavenger hunt! Give your child clues on where to find different birthday gifts around the house.
Arts and Crafts
Put a paint along YouTube video from Createful Kids or Art for Kids Hub on the TV or computer and let your child paint their very own birthday masterpiece. This will give them a birthday keepsake to always remember. Be an artist yourself and do some face painting for your child! Do an easy face paint character on their face to make them smile all day long. If you don’t want to paint or draw, you can do some other kind of craft with them. @CurlsAndKids on Instagram has plenty of easy DIY crafts you can do.
Dance Party
Put on some music and get dancing! The Kidz Bop YouTube channel has plenty of dance along videos or you can put on a Spotify or Apple Music playlist for kids. You can also bring out the video game Just Dance and challenge each other.
