Are you wondering about dog behavior during your pregnancy? I’m sure this has crossed the minds of pregnant women with a dog a time or two. You may even be wondering if it’s safe to have a dog during pregnancy. So many questions cross your mind when you’re pregnant. I get it, trust. This will be my Schnauzer’s second time experiencing my pregnancy and it has been quite interesting. I’m no expert about dog behavior, but I can definitely let you know how my dog acts during human pregnancy.
Signs Your Dog Knows You’re Pregnant
Can my dog sense that I’m pregnant? I definitely think so. We all know that a dog’s senses are way better than ours. Dogs can sense so many things like when you’re feeling down, bad vibes from a person, that you’re not feeling well, and probably so many more things. Did you know that dogs can sense cancer? Dog senses are A1! If a dog can sniff out cancer, I’m pretty sure a dog can sniff out pregnancy too.
There are a few signs I get from my dog that lets me know that he knows I’m pregnant. Being pregnant while having a dog is quite the experience. You get to know your dog better during pregnancy because you may even see a side of him that you’ve never seen before. Let me explain.
Dog Behavior Changes
The key sign to me that your dog knows you’re pregnant is dog behavior. Your dog may act totally different when you become pregnant. In fact, your dog may even know you’re pregnant before you do. It’s not like he can exactly tell you though, but you may notice him acting differently towards you. Here are some ways my dog acts differently when I’m pregnant.
Dog More Clingy Than Usual
My dog follows me EVERYWHERE! It’s not unusual for my dog to follow me around at all, but I feel like he makes sure he follows me around, even more, when I’m pregnant. He makes it his business to know where I’m at, at all times. My dog is more clingy and is stuck to me like glue no matter who is around. It doesn’t matter if my husband and kids stay downstairs…if I’m heading upstairs, you better believe he’s on my heels. If he doesn’t know where I’m at, he will go looking for me. Once he knows where I’m at, if there’s a spot for him to be next to my belly, that’s where you’ll find him unless my laptop is around. All eyes are on me…and my baby bump.
My dog just loves him some me when I’m pregnant. He just always has to be by my side or my belly’s side no matter what. I think it’s sweet that he wants to be there for me at all times. It’s just so interesting how he acts and turns his love and clinginess up a notch during pregnancy. It’s such a sweet experience.
Pregnant Belly Grabs My Dog’s Attention
When I say my baby bump grabs my dog’s attention, I really mean it! Just the other day, he has done something that he has never done before. It shocked me and the hubs and it was actually pretty funny and adorable. On Thanksgiving on our way to family dinner, my dog decided he wanted to have a seat on my pregnant belly instead of my lap this time. I guess he said it was the best spot in the car! Some people I’ve talked to said he’s protecting the baby already and keeping him warm. Too funny.
My Schnauzer Simba decided to have a seat on my pregnant belly. I guess it was the best spot! Or was he keeping baby warm and protected? How does your dog act during a pregnancy? Is he protective or does he not really care? Is he always around you and near your belly?
Not only will he sit on my pregnant belly, but he will also curl up next to it, lay his head on it, or place his paws on it. I think it’s just the cutest thing ever. At this point in my pregnancy, if you place an ear up to my stomach you may be able to hear baby’s heartbeat. I wonder if he hears the baby’s heartbeat when he lays his head on my stomach. Wouldn’t that be the cutest? He probably does because their ears function way better than ours!
Dog Protective Over Baby
Baby isn’t even here yet and my dog is so protective over him already and me too! Simba’s not going to let anybody he doesn’t know too close to me unless I let him know that it’s cool. If the husband and I are giving love taps, he doesn’t like it and he’ll let my husband know that he needs to chill. If my dog senses that someone is annoying me he doesn’t like that either. And don’t let anybody get too close to the baby bump because he’ll get jealous and suggest that you back up off me!
There are so many dog protective over pregnant owner or dog protective over baby videos on YouTube, just do a search if you’d like a glimpse of dog behavior during pregnancy or once the baby is actually here.
Once the baby arrives, he’ll be protective then too. He’s pretty protective over all of my kids. Schnauzers are definitely good with kids. I can’t wait until he gets to meet the new baby and be the baby’s little guard dog.
