No, I’m not currently pregnant guys…CHILL. This is a question I asked myself when I first became pregnant back in 2014. I would always wonder “can my dog sense that I’m pregnant?” because he definitely started acting a lot different like he knew what was going on. I’m no vet or anything, but I’m pretty sure that my dog could sense that I was pregnant.
I’m sure a lot of you are probably wondering the same thing if you are currently pregnant and you have a dog or another pet. Your dog is probably acting noticeably different as well huh? Well, your dog has noticed that you are acting differently too! You may be all moody, napping more, randomly talking to your belly while rubbing it, being extra careful, a change of routine, and so much more. Your dog pays a lot of attention to you and he is there every step of the way with all of those extra trips to the bathroom, the fridge, and the couch lounging!
Dogs are super smart if you didn’t notice that already. Their senses are totally better than ours of course. For example, my dog can always sense when someone is at the door way before I can. They are just built that way and that is so awesome to me! I wonder if my dog knew that I was pregnant before I did….hmmm…LOL.
My Dog’s Behavior During Pregnancy
Simba was SUPER CLINGY when I became pregnant. He would not leave my side. I mean I guess you could say he was already clingy before I was pregnant, but he became even more clingy to me. My shadow was no longer my shadow…my shadow was my dog! He also would curl up close to my belly or lay his head there. He also became pretty OVER protective of me…even with my husband LOL it was actually pretty funny and cute that his little self was trying to make sure nobody messed with me and the baby. We did make him calm down some with the OVER protectiveness because he acted like he did not even want my HUSBAND near me…so yeah, he had to CHILL. My dog’s behavior definitely let’s me know that he knew that I was pregnant.

As you can see Simba was ALWAYS by my side whether I was lounging or working. He was my protector as well as the baby’s protector. He is the best guard dog ever don’t you think? Simba didn’t jump on me as much or anything…he’d rather just lay gently on me. It was so cute. I loved to see how Simba acted throughout my pregnancy. It was very interesting to watch. It’s even more interesting to see him actually interact with the baby now. He is so gentle and patient. I love it! So what do you think? Do you think a dog can sense pregnancy?
How did your dog or other pet act when you were pregnant (or currently pregnant)? Could you dog sense that a family member or friend was pregnant? How did your pet act around them? Share in the comments below! We’d love to hear from you!

I think they can tell. Haven’t had a chance to test it out with Mr. N though!
MattieDog says
That’s a good question – I’m not really sure. But I would imagine that they have some sort of consciousness of something different, particularly if the human acts/smells differently!

I think my dogs always knew that something was going on, but it might just have been the way I moved differently.

My son and Daughter in law are expecting their first baby in April and the Lab definitely seems to know what is happening. She will be a great big sister. ♥

Animals are usually quite intuitive, so I suspect they can sense changes in your body, your scent or something.

My sister said her Lab hung by her closely when she was pregnant and slept in their room which she normally doesn’t do…

I think our pets are so in tune with changes in us they must know!

Yes, no doubt in my mind. Our pets are so in tune with us. My dogs even sense mood changes! Great post and really pretty pictures!

Dogs can definitely sense chemical and hormonal changes and smells so for sure they would know something was going on even if they were not sure exactly what.

I think they can definitely tell when we’re preg.

As I had my children long ago, I really can not respond to any reactions from my pets. It would make sense that your dog does know and probably did know before you did. If does can sense changes in the human body for diseases etc. They must be able to sense the increase in hormone changes in your body. Dogs and cats are super smart about these things. Hey they have all day to watch us and our behaviors, I’m sure they would notice a change in anything.
Congratulation by the way!

Dogs can smell A LOT. 🙂 My dog was by my side even when I wasn’t with child, so I can’t say I noticed a difference. She was very concerned (in a doting way) after the fact, every time, though.

I think that is pawsome that your dog might know. You look fantastic!

I’m convinced that our fur children can detect difference in our bodies and moods. At 60, I don’t ever plan on becoming pregnant (LOL) but I know Truffle and Brulee can sense when I’m ill.
Christine says
OMG! You had me at first… I thought you were preggy again. I’m sure that they do sense when you are, as I know they are aware when you are ill, etc. Dogs are amazing beings.
