About My Mommy Medicine by Edwidge Danticat
Pages: 32 pages
Age Range: 3 and up
My Mommy Medicine is about a little girl that isn’t feeling her best, but her mom knows how to make it all better. It’s a story about a mother’s love and how her daughter can always count on her to be there for her in some way no matter the issue.
Our Thoughts on My Mommy Medicine
I think this book has my baby girl written all over it. She’s a daddy’s girl when she wants to be, but my baby is a mommy’s girl ALL DAY! She always wants her mommy and she definitely views me as her “mommy medicine”. I can make anything better in her eyes. The book is a quick and easy read. It’s also one of the cutest books I’ve ever read. I can see my daughter bringing me this book a lot at bedtime to read it. She’s going to want to hear the story of her and her mommy over and over again. Danticat did such a good job capturing the bond of mother and daughter. She really shows how a mom will do anything to make her child feel better and put a smile back on her face.
The illustrations in this book are amazing! The cover alone lets you know this is going to be a beautiful book. I just love how the illustrations fill up the page. My daughter and I can totally relate to the characters too because they look just like us with their curly hair and their melanin glowing off the page. Shannon Wright has skills! She really made this book come to life with her illustrations. I loved her work so much that I had to find her on Instagram and trust me, her Instagram feed didn’t disappoint.
Mommy Medicine kept my 4-year old’s attention and she giggled at the title. She thought the illustrations were so beautiful. Again, the illustrations came to life because she laughed her head off when the mom was dancing or the daughter made a disgusted face. A lot of what we read reminded her of the bond we share. She said, “you do that too mommy” a lot while we were reading it. This is just the sweetest book and you and your child will really enjoy reading it again and again. You will get so many smiles, kisses, and hugs while reading this book with your little one. We love it and think it’s a must-read.
