As my baby girl gets older, I realize that she is watching everything that I say and do. It’s important for me to make sure that I lead by example. She’s always watching and she’s looking at what her parents do and say so she can do it too. I want both of my girls to stand up for what’s right and have the courage to do so. Some adults can learn a thing or two from a child too! Don’t be so quick to hush the children. Let them help with things of importance. Children can change the world if you let them.

About Let The Children March by Monica Clark-Robinson
Pages: 40
Age Range: 6-9 years
Let The Children March is a beautiful picture book that shows just how helpful children were back in the 1960s. Thousands of African American children decided to march in protest for their civil rights after hearing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. speak. The children faced so much hate, but yet they were so brave and truly made a difference in the world in so many ways.
Our Thoughts on Let The Children March
First of all, the illustrations in this book are amazing! Frank Morrison did a beautiful job bringing history to life. Illustrations are super important in a picture book because the pictures need to grab the child’s attention. I was reading this book to my oldest daughter and my 2-year-old stopped in her tracks and came and sat down so she could see the pictures in the book again. The pictures are really big and bold and will instantly grab a child’s attention.
In addition to the illustrations being beautiful, the words by Monica Clark-Robins are just as beautiful. It’s very well written and a quick and easy read. A child is telling the story through her eyes as she marched for 3 days to protest for her rights. I found this to be very powerful and also made it easier to understand for a child. It also gives a child an idea of what it was like to protest as you’re reading it from the child’s point of view.
There are many protests happening now as well where I have to explain what’s going on to my children. This book sheds light on why people protest, why it’s necessary, and what kind of difference it can make. Jordyn instantly recognized Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as that is the main person that children are taught about in school for Black history month. It’s our responsibility to teach our kids more of our history throughout the year and a book like this can help. I’ve never heard of this particular story so I’m glad I was able to share it with the girls. We all learned something new.
Children Can Change the World
Jordyn loved the fact that the children were so brave and were able to make a difference in how Black people were being treated. This book made her so happy that a big smile was glued to her face after reading it. It also reminded her of Ruby Bridges and she loves hearing about children in history that she can look up to and be like. She is still shocked that there were discriminatory laws that kept Black people from white people. I’ve shared this with her before, but she was shocked all over again after reading this. Questions came flying out of her mouth left and right about the situations in the book from the discrimination to the people being treated badly for protesting.
After reading this book, I’m sure many children will have questions and also be proud of what a difference a child can make. This book can spark some great conversation and also teach some valuable lessons. You should definitely read this book to your kids not only for Black history month but at any time of year. It’s still very relevant even though this historical event was back in the 1960s. We recommend this book!

Wow, those illustrations are amazing! You usually don’t see that much detail in children’s books. The kids from the Florida school shooting last week show how much power and influence kids can have when they are passionate about something. I love this
