I absolutely love reading new books to the kiddies so I knew I just had to have Rudy’s New Human. I could already tell by the cover and the title of the book that our family would be able to relate. Rudy looks just like a Miniature Schnauzer which is what our dog Simba is. I was delighted when I was given a free copy of Rudy’s New Human in exchange for a fair and honest review.
About Rudy’s New Human by Roxanna Elden
Rudy’s New Human is all about a dog’s experience of getting a new family member which happens to be a baby. The book is told from the dog’s perspective. The dog is a little confused that the baby isn’t quite interested in all of the same things that he is. He also didn’t expect for the baby to steal his shine! He used to be the baby of the family so he is not used to this new human at all. Rudy and the family all have to adjust. In the end everything works out just fine and Rudy and the new human become the best of friends.
About Roxanna Elden
Roxanna Elden is a teacher, author, speaker, and a mother from Miami Florida. Her inspiration for Rudy’s New Human actually came from her very own dog Rudy Elden! She observed how Rudy adjusted to the new baby and decided to write a book all about it. I also found out a tidbit about Rudy Elden the dog and I can’t resist sharing it with you all! According to Amazon.com, “Rudy Elden has been a professional dog for eight years and is making his literary debut as the canine-narrator of Rudy’s New Human. He likes lunchmeat, cheese, long naps, and medium length walks.” He seems like our kinda dog!
Our Thoughts on Rudy’s New Human
We absolutely love this book! This book is super cute and is very easy to understand. The kiddies loved this book so much that they wanted me to read it again right then! The dog definitely reminds us of Simba for sure. Simba had to adjust when we brought home our now 11 month old. I think having a new baby was kind of hard on everyone at first and Simba may have felt a tad bit neglected just like Rudy did.
It’s easy for the baby to receive all of the attention, but we got it together just like Rudy’s family in the end. Our 5 year old thought that Rudy was hilarious and that the baby was just like her baby sister. She also thought the dog pooping was hilarious of course. Her favorite part in the book is when Rudy felt better about the baby and he received more attention. Our 11 month old loved all of the bright colors and amazing illustrations of the book. She loves pointing at things so she had a blast!
The book was a fun read which also taught the kiddies something at the same time. I also enjoyed the book myself. It was a very sweet and funny way to introduce adding a new baby to the family and the illustrations by Ginger Seehafer are gorgeous! This book would be the perfect gift for families that have a dog and another child in the home to understand how the dog may feel and start a discussion on how we can fix different issues that were read in the book.
This story can also help prepare the sibling for the new addition to the family. It’s also pretty cool that the book includes an interracial couple so it is also a great book for interracial families. It is always nice to have a book for little ones where they can see themselves and relate. This book helps start a discussion between parents and children about various actions that take place. For example, in the book, the baby pulls the dog’s ear. This gives the parent an opportunity to discuss how a baby should behave with a dog. The baby doesn’t know any better, but we must teach the baby how she should interact with pets and teach pets how to interact with kids. The book looks great. I love the photos of your girls enjoying the story and of course, the last photo of Simba and your younger daughter. I always thought it was important to share stories with different types of families. I didn’t want them to grow up thinking that families can only be one way.

This sounds like a wonderful book! Not only will it teach kids, but even many parents don’t realize that the family pet can also feel neglected when a new baby comes. This sometimes causes the pet to act out and could cause a family to surrender that pet to a shelter because they don’t understand what’s “wrong” with the pet. Great review, thanks!

Loved the pictures. It’s so important to teach our children about animals and ensure they have empathy towards animals. Growing families can pose all sorts of challenges and books like Rudy’s New Human really help children understand the changes which will take place in a way they can comprehend.
Keep up the great work Kia.
