Kids are getting a hold of technology much quicker these days which can be quite overwhelming for parents. This is a whole new world when it comes to keeping your child safe online. Kids are being exposed to things at an earlier age and it’s actually kind of scary. I didn’t get my first phone until high school and now kids are getting phones in elementary school! Our 10-year-old has had a phone for a few years now so we’ve been dealing with this for some time.

How can you keep your child safe online without feeling overwhelmed and still giving them their privacy?

3 Ways to Keep Your Child Safe Online

The worldwide web can be one big scary place. Kids don’t understand how much information or misinformation they can come into contact with every single day. Kids can easily get tangled up in the web and come into contact with online predators or even get bullied by their peers. It’s our job as parents to keep our children safe and we have to make sure our kids understand that and do as much as we can to keep them safe.

Communicate With Your Child Often

An easy way to keep your child safe online is to talk to them often. Communication is key for a good relationship with your child. If you talk to your child often, you’ll know what’s going on in their own world that may seem closed off sometimes especially when they hit those tween and teen years. So let your child know that they can always talk to you about anything.

Communicate with Your Child Often to Keep Them Safe Online

Ask your child how they’re doing and make them feel comfortable when they talk to you. Pay attention to what they are saying and of course show interest. Talk to your child about internet safety and remind them of the dangers of talking to strangers online.

Engage with Your Child on Social Media

Tweens are totally into texting and social media. Our tween stays on her phone and knows all the latest TikTok dances and trends. She would much rather be on her phone than outside. Back when I was younger we stayed outdoors, but kids these days are all about being social online.

What better way to know what’s going on with your child online and who they are engaging with on social media than to engage with them yourself from time to time? Share funny things with them, like their videos or photos, leave comments and hype them up. Stay connected with them online as much as possible, but don’t do it in a way that pushes them away. Be open and honest. You were your child’s age once. Remember that because it’s helpful!

Engage with Your Child on Social Media

Communicate with your child online and show them the ropes of what to do and what not to do online. Get familiar with the apps that your child is using and talk openly to them about it. Make sure that they understand that what’s said on the internet lives on forever so they should always be careful of what they say.

Use the Bark App

Parenting is much different than when we were growing up and it can be so overwhelming to try and keep up with all the things, but Bark helps with that so much! Bark is an award-winning monitoring and screen time management service that helps keep kids safe online. Bark is able to monitor text, emails, YouTube, and 30+ apps and social media platforms.  It definitely helps you stay in the know with your child and is easy to set up and use.

Your child may be worried about their privacy when you tell them that you’re putting the Bark app on their phone, but just have an open and honest conversation with them about it. Bark only sends you alerts when there is something concerning that you should know about. If issues like cyberbullying, adult content, sexual predators, profanity, suicidal ideation, threats of violence, etc. come up, you will definitely be notified. Parents get alerts through the app, text, and email.
