Have you ever wondered “do I give my dog enough attention?” or “should I be giving my dog more attention?” Of course, you should! There’s nothing wrong with showing your dog more attention and love. So take a moment to see why you should give your dog more attention. Dogs need love too! I’m sure this can be applied to other pets as well.
Why You Should Give Your Dog More Attention
-
Dogs are only with us for a short time
It’s sad, but it’s true. Dogs are not with us very long. This quote says it all…
[bctt tweet=”Dogs’ lives are too short. Their only fault, really – Agnes Sligh Turnbull ” username=”comewagalong”] So since you know that your dog will only be with you for a short time…it’s very important to give your dog as much attention as you can. If you just remember this one thing and nothing else, I’m sure this will make you spend more time with your dog and give them all of the attention they want. See more dog quotes here and here. -
Dogs need your attention and companionship
Dogs love being around their owner and just love being a part of their day in any way that they can. My dog follows me around EVERYWHERE and hardly ever leaves my side. There are a few moments in the day when he wants some time to himself, but it’s not much. Let your dog cuddle up with you and talk to him. He can’t talk back, but believe me he is listening! Your dog needs you so make sure you are there for him.

Dogs need to be active
Dogs need to be active to be healthy just like you do. You want your dog around for as much as possible right? Be active with your dog on a regular basis. Take your dog for a walk or jog. Let your dog interact and play with other dogs at the dog park. Have a playdate with other dogs in your family or your friend’s dog. You’re showing your dog more attention and keeping him healthy. Win, win!

Dogs are the best friends you’ll ever have
My dog is my BFF! Since he’s my best friend I should treat him as such. Don’t you give your human besties your attention and you are there for them when they need you? Make sure you pencil your dog in on that busy schedule of yours. Include your dog in some of your activities. Check to see if some of the places you go are dog-friendly and bring your dog along. Always be there for your dog and show him that you care! That starts with giving him your attention and he needs it every single day.

Dogs love you more than you love yourself
Dogs love you unconditionally. They are ride or die! Dogs love you no matter what you think of yourself or if you just yelled at him 5 seconds ago for getting into the trash bag. We should all be more like our dogs. Dogs are so forgiving and loving…it’s just amazing the kind of personality a dog has. They are just so awesome and a dog so awesome deserves all of the attention that you can possibly give.

What are some other reasons you should give your pet more attention? How much attention should you give your dog? Share in the comments below! We’d love to hear from you!
I loved your article-you are right on point. I would also add that dogs need attention because they cannot talk to us. Sometimes they might need something but they cannot communicate it. I like to take my dog on a hike on weekends at the local trail. One time, I walked a bit too long without giving him water. He finally broke down and nipped my ankle to get me to stop and pay attention to him! Now I’m more careful about that, especially when it’s hot out.
So sad but true about their way-too-short time with us. We lost our 15 year old girl Ginger in June, and I made sure to spoil her as much as possible. Roxy and Rico are super spoiled too!
Our cats are loved for the same reasons. They are m best friends and provide grounded reassurance when i feel under the weather or struggle in some way.
A pet has faith in you. They remind you to have fast in yourself!

It’s so very true. They give us everything, nowhere else can we get this kind of unconditional love. The quote is so sad but you are right – they live a short time yet in that time they love more than we could ever comprehend.

Oh that one reason — they love you more than you love yourself — really struck a chord. Great list!
Layla gets so much love and attention plus she is lucky I work from home plus their is a dog park a block away from me so whenever I want to take a break it is our time together and I leave all electronics at home and focus on her also. That is our way of living although there are times I feel maybe she is not getting enough but LOL it is the Jewish thing in me
Absolutely. This ABSOLUTELY applies to animals other than dogs. We cats need attention too! Until we decide we don’t, that is. PURRS
The reasons you provided are why we travel with our little guy. Creating memories that will outlive his own short time with us – to stimulate his mind, get him moving and exploring, to show he’s a part of the family …. all reasons for taking him along.
Fantastic list and I especially love number 5. As an adult, I’ve only had one dog — he turns 16 this year (we’re estimating since he’s a rescue), and he gives us so much love!
These reasons can be applied to cats and other pets too , like you said. If anything at all it’s all about proper bonding with your fur kids. They are family and should be treated as such, with respect , love, kindness and care. Like you mentioned, they do so much for us and love us unconditionally. To spend extra time and attention is really a small sacrifice in comparison. Because when the day comes they are no longer here, we’ll wish we had more time.
I wholly endorse this advice! We DO want more and more and more of your attention. And we live for that! Thanks for sharing.
Many great points. I own a pet loss / funeral home – yes their lives are very short. Loved the quote. It hits home.
My motto is, spoil your dog like there is no tomorrow. Because you never know when they might not be. Might sound morbid but it’s true. And the worst hit when grieving is regret.
I consider my dogs to be family and some of my best friends. They are used to lots of attention, and if I’m super busy they usually make sure I spend some quality time with them.
These are all great resons! Dogs are so good to us, they deserve all the attention they can get 🙂
Great post. I’ve had a velcro dog or two that demanded a lot of attention. I like to take mine for long walks to wear them out some, then I can get some me time. Also dogs need more attention so we can pay attention if they have a problem.
I was concerned that adopting a third dog would take attention away from the other too. Does it? Not really. When I get home from work I’m greeted by three wagging tails and a regal Rooster tail (cat). I can’t even get through the door without love and kisses for at least five minutes. That is followed by fetch with Reese, while I pet Henry with my other hand, receive kisses from Jack, and listen to Rooster crow on about his day. LOADS OF LOVE! And I agree, it can never be too much.
My Elvis hates not receiving attention so this is definitely true!
I love when you said they are our ride or die. They definitely give us their all and we should do the same in return. 🙂
