Let’s pause and take a moment to talk about pets and women of domestic violence and how you can help protect them.
Every 9 seconds a woman in the United States is assaulted or beaten. That’s more than 4 million women per year! Did you know nearly 1 million animals per year are also abused or even killed in connection with domestic violence? Abusers use pets as pawns, and survivors tend to remain in abusive relationships out of concern for the welfare and safety of their pets.
Come Wag Along is a Bayer Pet Influencer and we are happy to help spread the word about the PAWS Act. We always share things that we find beneficial to our readers and things that Simba and I love and support.
There is a strong need for more domestic violence shelters to provide accommodations that include pets. Since this is an unmet need many survivors of domestic violence tend to stay in abusive relationships because their pet has nowhere to go. This is why the PAWS Act is needed. Survivors of domestic violence shouldn’t have to choose between a life without their pet or a dangerous living situation.
About the PAWS Act
The PAWS act is a bicameral, bipartisan legislation that aims to protect victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and dating violence from emotional and psychological trauma caused by violence against their pets.
Watch the below video to see how we can all bring awareness to this issue together.
PAWS: Share the Story!
How Bayer Supports the Paws Act
Bayer gave 3 domestic violence shelters $20,000 each for their work in acknowledging that pets are a part of the family that cannot be left behind. To address the issue of no laws being in place to protect the pets of survivors of domestic violence, Bayer launched a campaign called PAWS: Share the Story. This campaign brings awareness about the PAWS Act. I’m so happy to be apart of Bayer’s Pet Influencer team and I love all of the wonderful things they are doing.
How to Support the Pet and Women Safety Act
In 2007, Noah’s Animal House (NAH) opened up the first full-service stand-alone pet boarding facility in the Country! NAH provides food, shelter and veterinary services on the grounds of The Shade Tree Shelter, the largest women and children’s domestic violence shelter in Nevada. Their mission is to keep the entire family united as they transition out of an abusive situation. As you know, pets are family so they are included!
It’s very simple to help raise awareness for the PAWS act and help domestic violence shelters like Noah’s House. It only takes a few minutes of your time and I hope you’re ready to help. Domestic violence situations are so heartbreaking. I hope more women and pets are able to get out of such horrible situations. Here are the steps to help protect pets and women of domestic violence:
- Take action and send an e-letter to your local Congressman/woman, asking them to support the PAWS Act. All you have to do is go to petandwomensafety.com and scroll down the page to fill out the form and submit it. That’s it! By submitting the form it handles all the work for you.
